In a ceremony at the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) headquarters in Rome, an unlikely duo shared the spotlight as co-winners of the 2024 FAO Partnership Award. The Metropolitan City of Ulsan from South Korea and the Centre for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) from the UK were recognized for their trailblazing efforts in promoting sustainable agriculture and food security.
The prestigious accolade, bestowed by FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu, underscores the pivotal role of partnerships in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Qu hailed the awardees as shining examples of how collective talents, innovation, and far-reaching collaborations can uplift communities and safeguard the planet’s future.
Ulsan’s Deputy Mayor, Ahn Hyo Dae, beamed with pride as the industrial-turned-eco-friendly city was lauded for its transformative journey. From restoring the once-polluted Taehwa River to supporting FAO’s response programs in Ukraine and fostering an internship program for local students, Ulsan has emerged as a model for sustainable urban development.
Meanwhile, CABI’s Partnerships Development Director, Janny Vos, celebrated the organization’s impactful initiatives, such as the PlantwisePlus program in Southern Africa. This groundbreaking project has empowered smallholder farmers with practical advice through local plant clinics, reducing the risk of poverty by a remarkable 5 percent in Rwanda.
CABI’s BioProtection Portal, supporting biological plant protection in 42 countries, further exemplifies the organization’s commitment to addressing agricultural challenges globally and aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the ceremony unfolded during the 175th session of the FAO Council, Qu Dongyu’s closing remarks resonated with a sense of hope and determination: “Congratulations to both partners for their commendable contributions… Their efforts are pivotal in creating a better world, and FAO looks forward to continuing working with you, and all partners, for people and the planet.”
With this prestigious recognition, Ulsan and CABI have etched their names in the annals of sustainable agriculture, inspiring others to forge innovative partnerships that uplift communities, protect the environment, and pave the way for a more food-secure future.
